About me and my work
I am a ceramicist and teacher living in Hindhead, Surrey. My time is shared between making my own ceramics and teaching workshops from my studio. My inspiration comes from nature, including wildflowers and seed-heads that I find while walking in the local countryside, as well as flowers and birds in my garden. I also have an interest in botanical drawings; although scientific, they are not exact representations like a photograph, instead they show us the details of a plant through the eyes of the artist. I hope to capture this in my own work.
To create my cylinder vases, I combine lino printing with clay. I enjoy the process of starting with a sketch, turning it into a design and then carving it into the lino, before rolling on the colour and pressing it into the soft clay. The end piece is tactile due to the impressed relief of the lino cut, so to fully appreciate them you need to pick them up and touch them.
I also hand sculpt flower ornaments and larger pieces including poppy seed heads for the garden. For the garden ornaments I use a bronze glaze which catches the sunlight.
Each piece is made by hand, therefore each piece is unique. A recent project was to create personalised vases for a wedding; each vase was thrown on the potters wheel, glazed using a range of pastel shades and then gold lustre was applied before the final firing. I have developed my own glaze which has a soft satin sheen and I tint this using a range of metal oxides and ceramic stains.
